The second half of 2011 has delivered a noticeable pick-up in activity in all areas of Knowledge Reservoir’s business. In particular, our overseas activity is keeping our international subsidiaries in the United Kingdom, Oman, and Malaysia quite busy. While a resurgence of activity in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico has been relatively slow, global deepwater projects are accelerating with West Africa seeing a large portion of this activity.
Our newly-formed Real-Time Systems division is off to an excellent start having acquired its first project delivering RTOC deployment expertise within a North Sea environment. |
Our London office, which is responsible for business in Europe and Africa, continues to progress major project opportunities in Nigeria, Ghana, Angola, as well as South Africa. These opportunities will commence in the third quarter of this year. In the meantime, a major multidisciplinary team was deployed at our office in Kuala Lumpur to work on a field development plan for a major operator in the region. This has tied in well with our general build-up of staff in the region.
Our focus on the Middle East continues with extensive new business development activity in Qatar and Yemen. We look forward to kicking off these major projects in the third quarter of this year.
Closer to headquarters, our business in Colombia and Mexico continues to grow with Knowledge Reservoir resources now deployed in both countries.
I take this opportunity to wish our clients, partners, employees, and associates all the best for the remainder of 2011.

- The Real-Time Systems division began development of a distributed drilling support system supporting Apache Oil. The project will review Apache’s drilling operations in West Texas and the North Sea. An initial pilot program has been defined to support Apache’s North Sea operation with plans to expand corporate-wide drilling support.
- The Real-Time Systems division recently met with Petrolink and PetroDaq corporations to discuss services and products needed to support remote drilling operations. We have established formal relationships with these and other companies to discuss costing and support requirements.
- We continue to make progress in establishing strategic partnerships with local aerospace corporations that are capable of supporting our oil industry initiatives. Meetings were held with the United Space Alliance over the past couple of weeks to discuss their support in current pipeline control center initiatives.
- Funding has been approved for the establishment of the Florida Space Port Authority. This new Florida State organization will begin sponsoring commercial spaceflight operations throughout the state, which includes a requirement for command and control facilities at the Kennedy Space Center that Knowledge Reservoir is being asked to support. Funding is expected to be authorized by November 2011.

Knowledge Reservoir completed a 5-month study of the principal reservoirs in Bullwinkle Field for Dynamic Offshore Resources, LLC. The objective was to substantiate infill drilling locations and recompletion opportunities and for adding incremental reserves and production. The project was a collaborative effort between the Dynamic Offshore Resources and Knowledge Reservoir teams.

Just as the 2000’s were marked by Knowledge Reservoir’s launch into deepwater, this decade will be forever remembered for our fascination with shale. Trillions of cubic feet of gas and billions of barrels of oil in formations have been drilled through, avoided, and ignored since the beginning of our industry. As demand again climbs beyond 86M bbls/day, we turn to the plays we abandoned years ago to extract energy from the very source of the hydrocarbons we depleted from the surrounding conventional reservoirs.

Enhanced Recovery Study for the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation, and Enforcement (BOEMRE, formerly MMS)
The objective of the project was to produce a technical and economic report of enhanced recovery technologies, techniques, and processes aimed at increasing the potential to increase hydrocarbon recovery on the US Outer Continental Shelf (OCS). The report includes a summary of current offshore technologies incorporating artificial lift installations, such as gas lift and electrical submersible pumps (ESPs), waterflood, and subsea processing including boosting from the sea floor and from vertical caisson separators.

Downhole Commingling Research for the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation, and Enforcement (BOEMRE, formerly MMS)
The objective of this project was to produce a technical report to determine the effects and limitations of downhole commingling in regard to the ultimate recovery of hydrocarbons. The study addressed crossflow of reservoir fluids, the impact of reservoir drive mechanisms, and reliability of zone isolation methods.

IOR for Deepwater Gulf of Mexico for the Research Partnership to Secure Energy for America (RPSEA)
In 2010, Knowledge Reservoir led and directed this milestone research project for the federally funded RPSEA with primary project participants Louisiana State University and Anadarko Petroleum Corporation.
The project identified improved recovery opportunities in the early stages of field development planning, such that facility and well designs can be optimized to take advantage of those opportunities. Additionally, opportunities for improved recovery in producing fields were assessed, as were current and near-future technologies for improved recovery. The project included characterization of deepwater and ultra-deepwater reservoir assets and compiled and categorized key causes of trapped and remaining hydrocarbons in such reservoirs. The prioritization of technology gaps in improved recovery methods was also addressed as specifically relate to deepwater and ultra-deepwater reservoirs to identify leading concepts for future research, investment, development, testing, and deployment/application.
The project utilized current IOR/EOR evaluation work by Anadarko and its partners on the K2 Field to jump-start closing the technology gaps that have prevented application of an EOR process in deepwater GOM.
The primary outcomes of the project are advancement of understanding of improved recovery techniques,
provision of a foundation for future development, and testing and deployment phases of new technology and methodology, ultimately leading to the recovery of more resources from deepwater and ultra-deepwater assets. |
